Short Bio

I work as an Associate Professor and Director of the AI for Smart Mobility Lab in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering and the IRC for Smart Mobility and Logistics at KFUPM. Prior to joining KFUPM, I worked as the AI & Smart Mobility Technical Leader at General Motors Canada. I was also an Adjunct Faculty member, teaching graduate courses at the University of Toronto.

I am the author of Smart Mobility: Exploring Foundational Technologies and Wider Impacts and Optimization Algorithms: AI techniques for design, planning, and control problems.

Additionally, I have served as an Adjunct Professor at Ontario Tech University and Nile University, and as an Affiliate Member of the Center for Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence (CPAMI) at the University of Waterloo. My previous roles include Autonomous Vehicles Professor at Zewail City of Science and Technology, Head of AI at Sypron Solutions, Associate Professor and Head of the Engineering Science Department at Suez University, Associate Professor and Director of the Robotics and Autonomous Systems (RAS) Research Group at the German University in Cairo (GUC), Research Assistant Professor and AI Lecturer at the University of Waterloo, Canada, Visiting Professor at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, Spain, and Université de Sherbrooke, Canada, Visiting Researcher at the University of Reading, UK, and Distinguished Scholar at the University of Applied Sciences Ravensburg-Weingarten, Germany.

My current research focuses on the intersection of AI with mobility systems, services, and business models. My research addresses a wide range of problems, including seamless integrated mobility, SDV observability, combining reasoning and action, contextual causal inference, and design, planning, and control problems related to people mobility, logistics, and transportation infrastructure.

I have published five books and over 200 scientific papers in refereed journals and international conferences. Additionally, I have filed 72 US patents, trade secrets, and defensive publications.

I am a Senior Member in the IEEE, editor of Springer Lecture Notes in Electrical Engineering (LNEE), an associate editor for the International Journal of Robotics and Automation and founder and chair of IEEE Robotics and Automation Society (RAS) Egypt Chapter (recipient of the 2015 IEEE RAS Chapter of the Year Award and 2012 Chapter of the Year Award in IEEE Region 8). I am a member of Autonomous Robotics Group of IEEE RAS Standards and 2016 Advisory Committee Member of IEEE RAS-SIGHT (Special Interest Group on Humanitarian Technology) and a member of IEEE SIGHT Partnerships SubCommittee. I am the 2018 recipient of the 2018 IEEE Member and Geographic Activities (MGA) Achievement Award
